This natural Arizona Sierra sandstone formed 180 to 220 million years ago by wind and water as part of the geological formation, "Shinarump. The colors and designs were induced by a mineral spring containing iron oxides.
The Arizona Sienna Sandstone is found in Northern Arizona. The design patterns are natural and the color is achieved by heat treating the stone. This causes the iron oxides found naturally in the stone to oxidize--the richer the iron the deeper the color.
Sandstone is one of the most common types of sedimentary rock found in any kind of environment where there is water--including deserts.
