Hematite is an iron oxide that can be found in many rocks and soils--especially in places with mineral hot springs--and even on Mars. Its name originates from the Greek word haimatitis or "blood red" because of the red color it produces when crushed. A great way for identifying hematite is its streak--all hematite regardless of color or form will create a red-brown streak, some being more red, others more brown. Despite the misconception, pure hematite is not magnetic. If a specimen is magnetic, it is because the hematite is combined with magnetite.
Hematite is popular in jewelry like bracelets, beads and necklaces, but it is the world's leading ore and is mostly used to make pigments, ship ballasts, and radiation shields among other things. Its use as pigment has been around since at least 40,000 years ago.
Metaphysical Meaning and Healing Properties: Hematite is a protection and grounding stone that eliminates negative energy and helps one to focus. It's associated with the first chakra (root chakra). Hematite is believed to detoxify and be beneficial for the liver and blood.
