Darwin Glass is a natural impact glass that was created by a meteorite that hit off the west coast of Tasmania over 800,000 years ago. Fragments of tektites can be found in abundance in a 160 mile strewn field around the crater.

Impactites were formed when rocks and sediment of earth were melted and then rapidly cooled because of the impact of a large meteorite. Darwin glass in particular comes in two types: Type 1 is typically a more transparent white to light green; Type 2 is dark green to black. Type 2 is darker because it contains less silica and more magnesium, iron, chromium, cobalt and nickel and probably also holds material from the meteorite.
